2008 Parade Honorees
Grand Marshal:Honorable Mary K. Costello
Judge Mary
Costello was born in Kearny and was raised in Harrison. She attended Lincoln
School and Harrison High School. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree from
Seton Hall University in 1981, she went on to earn her Juris Doctor from the
University of Richmond in 1985. After graduating from Law School, Costello
worked for various law firms throughout northern New Jersey. In early 2007,
New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine nominated Costello to be a Judge of the
Superior Court, Civil Part. After being confirmed by the State Senate, Judge
Costello was sworn in on May 31, 2007.
Judge Costello was
formerly a Member of the Board of Governors for the Archdiocese of Newark
Youth and Young Adult Ministries (CYO) for ten years. She was a founding
member of the Golf Outing Committee for Josephine's Place in Elizabeth, NJ
and also served on the Board of Kenmare High School, part of the York Street
Project in Jersey City. All charitable pursuits had to cease upon her
appointment to the Bench since judges are prohibited from engaging in any
political or charitable fundraising.
Judge Costello has
been married to Jim Hague for 23 years. Hague is a freelance sportswriter
for various publications throughout northern NJ including The Observer.
Upon hearing that
she had been elected Grand Marshal, Judge Costello said, “I was thrilled to
be so honored. We are given too few opportunities to celebrate our heritage
and diversity in a public forum, so to be able to do so at the parade and
all the associated events is a special treat for me as an Irish-American
woman from Hudson County. My parents, sadly, are both deceased. My
father's family came from County Galway and my mother's family came from
County Tipperary. I dedicate my service as Grand Marshal to their memory."
Deputy Grand Marshals:Mr. Arthur Pettigrew
Arthur Pettigrew
is a lifelong resident of Harrison. Son of the late Arthur and Marguerite,
Pettigrew attended Harrison public schools and did some coursework at
Rutgers and NYU. He served on the Harrison Town Council, representing the 2nd
Ward from 1995 to 2007. While on the Council, Pettigrew worked on the
recreation, fire, and buildings committees. Pettigrew was instrumental in
opening the Harrison Community Center, a task for which he is especially
proud. He has been a member of the Harrison Planning Board since 2007 and is
a former member of the School Board of Estimate. Pettigrew is the current
President of the NJ High School Soccer Referees Assn. He is a member of the
Knights of Columbus and the Cifelli Assn. in Harrison.
Pettigrew worked
for NJ Bell and Verizon retiring in 1996. He has worked for the Passaic
Valley Sewerage Commission since 1999.
Pettigrew has been
married since 1988 to Tricia (Hinchcliffe). Together they have 6 children
and 4 grandchildren. Pettigrew also mentioned that he is especially thankful
to his mother-in-law, Anne Hinchcliffe, for all of her love and support
through the years.
Upon hearing the
news that he had been elected Deputy Grand Marshal, Pettigrew said, “It was
one of the proudest moments of my life. I wish my parents were alive because
they would be so proud. I am truly honored.”
Mr.
Larry Kelly
Larry Kelly was born
and raised in Harrison. He attended Lincoln elementary school and Harrison High
School. After high school, Kelly worked for Worthington Pump Company until the
company closed down. He then joined the United States Postal Service, where he
is still employed.

the Harrison-East Newark Elks since 1978, Kelly has served in many capacities
including Exalted Ruler, Lodge Secretary, Lodge Treasurer, and Trustee. In
addition, Kelly was the Lodge’s Chairman for the Elks National Foundation. His
involvement with the Elks is just one aspect of the fondness he has for both
Harrison and the entire West Hudson community. Kelly is also quite involved with
the Harrison Community Center, serving the youth sports programs. He is also a
member of the Irish-American Assn. in Kearny.
Kelly has 3 children:
daughters Dana and Lauren and a son, Reilly. Upon hearing that he had been
elected Deputy Grand Marshal, Kelly said, “I was very surprised and honored to
be chosen. I’m looking forward to a great parade.”

committee’s pleasure to honor these three deserving individuals. Together, they
have contributed so much to the West Hudson community and I am very proud to
have the opportunity and the privilege to walk the parade route with them.”
